Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (June, 2002)
Average review score:

EnchantingIf you ever wondered if medieval poetry and the lives of the people who wrote it was in some way intimidating or academic, `The Mays of Ventadorn` provides a truely unique way of experiencing it. W.S. Merwin, in his charateristic style, brings to life Ventadorn (places and personalities) the center of the troubadour universe by weaving his own personal relationship with the region, the era and its poets. This book is a wonderful journey through Merwin's experience and how he has found value and meaning in the troubadours -- It will leave you wanting more poetry and a plane ticket to Southwest France.

Average review score:

Excellent book, Amazon price beyond belief.Authoritative, thought-provoking work; I have assigned it many times in a History of Medicine course and many students actually read and respond to it.
Amazon is listing it at $77, which is about 5x the cost of the book last year. What does this signify?

Memories and Images: The World of Donald Vogel and Valley House Gallery
Published in Hardcover by University of North Texas Press (January, 2001)
Average review score:

For students of American art historyMemories And Images: The World Of Donald Vogel And Valley House Gallery is the story of Donald Vogel who arrived in Dallas at the beginning of World War II after a sojourn at the Art Institute of Chicago and began a successful and explosive career in the arts. This is the story of the wealth that came with East Coast art dealers following the oil field trails throughout Oklahoma and Texas. During a tumultuous time of dubious art and fake old masters, Vogel was able to be a part of bringing fine art works to Dallas, beginning with the Betty McLean Gallery, and later to his own Valley House Gallery. Already established as a painter, Vogel became a critical and important outlet in Dallas for art dealers in the United States and Europe. An honor that has endured for the past fifty-eight years at the heart of the Dallas art scene. Memories And Images is an autobiography that is very highly recommended and informative reading for students of American art history in general, and the work and contributions of Donald Vogel and his Valley House Gallery in particular.

Men at Midlife
Published in Paperback by Auburn House Paperback (December, 1981)
Average review score:

An insightful masterpiece of psychological researchA few years ago I wrote a research paper for a college class in the psychology of personality. I read extensively from the literature on men at midlife and this book by Farrell and Rosenberg stood out for it's sensitive, penetrating and revealing portrait of what can be a difficult time in the lives of American men. Though a work of research backed by numerical data, this is a book that is readable cover to cover. The authors not only look unsparingly at the demands that our society makes on males but also thoroughly review the different schools of thought on maturation and put these to the test. They find actual "crisis" at midlife to be uncommon but describe a denial of the true self as the rule for a majority of men. Also related is the difference that class makes in the likelihood of satisfaction at midlife. This book is the standard by which I would compare any work on male midlife and I can't recommend it too highly.

Middle Class Dreams: The Politics and Power of the New American Majority
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (February, 1995)
Average review score:

A worthwhile read !! Greenberg gives this book life! This book is a facinating read for those interested in modern American political history. The book traces the political sentiments of one average middle class blue collar community from the eighties through the Clinton years, and tells much about what we might expect from America's middle class this election year. It is scholarly, but not dry. Great book.

Minding a Sacred Place
Published in Hardcover by Boulder House Publishers (November, 2001)
Average review score:

LIVING WITH AN HISTORIC SITEThis is a beautifully produced coffee table quality book relating experiences with Indians, nature and architecture. It has many high quality photographs taken by the owners over the years. Phillip Johnson, an architectural icon describes the architecture as the best use of rocks in a dwelling in the world...the architecture connects huge boulders without intruding on nature. Text and photographs heighten the feelings and importance of living with nature and this registered historic site, rather than just on it.
